A market trader has been sentenced after being caught selling unsafe electrical lamps at a Christmas market in Uxbridge.

Yilmaz Bozkaya, 48, of Warwick Road in Carlisle, was prosecuted by Hillingdon Council’s trading standards team and appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 15 July. He pleaded guilty to three offences under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.

Bozkaya was given a 60-hour unpaid work order and ordered to pay £2,000 in prosecution costs, along with a £114 victim surcharge.

The investigation found that Bozkaya had been selling 56 unsafe lamps at his stall during the 2023 Christmas market. The products had non-British standard plugs, insecure electrical cords, and access to live parts that could cause electric shocks or fires.

In addition, the lamps had poor labelling, lacked clear safety instructions, and did not include any manufacturer information.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, said: “Our trading standards team will not hesitate to protect the public and take action against individuals selling unsafe products in our borough. Selling faulty electrical items can have serious consequences and I’m glad these items are no longer on our streets.

“The council is working hard to stamp out the sale of unsafe goods, and my thanks to our officers for their continued hard work and dedication in bringing these offences to light and keeping Hillingdon a safe borough.”
